GODFREY MATANGIRA
(Wedza, Zimbabwe)
Godfrey Matangira trained under masters of sculpture in 1998. His uncle was internationally acclaimed sculptor, Nicholas Mukomberanwa who passed away in 2002 and left behind a distinct artistic legacy to the newer generation of Zimbabwean sculptors.
Nicholas and Albert Mamvura, his other uncle, taught Godfrey many skilled hand sculpting techniques at Nicholas’s studio in Ruwa. By 2006, Godfrey moved on to work independently at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, where many well-known Zimbabwean sculptors create and exhibit.
Through his expert training, Godfrey has developed his own signature, recognisable style of creating flamboyant hair on his figurative artworks.
