SHEPHERD PHIRI
(1978, Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe)
Shepherd not only a remarkable sculptor of large scale works but is also an enthusiastic teacher. In fact, his wife Charity is his sculpting assistant. He began sculpting while in his teens alongside his peers including Rodrick Makahari, Samuel Magakwa, Edgar Sahondo and Witness Bonjisi. His work is influenced by Second Generation sculptor Joseph Munemo. As his work grew in sophistication and popularity, he participated in local exhibitions and festivals including at Chitungwiza Arts Centre.
Working with very hard serpentines including Springstone and Bluegrass, Shepherd creates large scale heads, torsos and even botanical sculptures. He participates in international group exhibitions throughout North America, Germany and Korea.
