STEPHEN MURENZA

(1982, Rushinga, Zimbabwe)

Stephen Murenza grew up in a rural area, in a family of six boys, including his sculptor brothers Julius and Rufaro. Following in their footsteps, he worked as their apprentice, honing his technical sculpting and polishing skills. In 2000, he moved to Chitungwiza to perfect his craft and exhibit his creations. Each stone Stephen selects, guides his direction. As he grew up amidst nature, he remains inspired by it and he tries to celebrate nature in each of his sculptures, through its textures and forms. He wishes to express positivity and a love of life within his work – which can be either representational or abstract.
His work has been exhibited internationally by gallerists in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Africa and he has spent some time in Canada conducting sculpture workshops.
